Rescue Boat Winch
A rescue boat winch is a safety-critical lifting device designed for launching and recovering rescue boats under normal and emergency conditions. The winch shall be designed in accordance with SOLAS, LSA Code, and relevant Class Society rules. The main components are listed below:
1. Winch Drum
The drum is designed to store the wire rope and transmit the lifting force.
-
Grooved drum for proper wire rope spooling
-
Manufactured from high-strength steel
-
Sized to ensure correct fleet angle and minimum bending radius
2. Wire Rope
The wire rope connects the winch to the rescue boat.
-
Galvanized or stainless steel, marine-grade
-
High safety factor in accordance with class requirements
-
Designed for corrosion resistance and fatigue life
3. Drive System (Electric or Hydraulic Motor)
The drive system provides the lifting and lowering power.
-
Electric motor with marine protection class (IP56 or higher), or
-
Hydraulic motor suitable for continuous and emergency operation
-
Designed to operate under full load and adverse sea conditions
4. Gearbox
The gearbox reduces motor speed and increases torque at the drum.
-
Helical or planetary gearbox
-
High efficiency and low noise
-
Designed for shock loads during rescue operations
5. Brake System
The brake system is one of the most critical components for safety.
-
Automatic load-holding brake (fail-safe, normally closed)
-
Spring-applied, hydraulically or electrically released brake
-
Capable of holding 100% of rated load plus safety margin
-
Emergency manual release function (if required by class)
6. Control System
The control system allows safe and precise operation of the winch.
-
Local control panel with UP / DOWN / EMERGENCY STOP
-
Optional remote control from davit or deck
-
Overload protection and interlocks
7. Load Measurement / Overload Protection (Optional)
Used to prevent overloading and ensure safe operation.
-
Load pin or load cell integrated into the system
-
Visual load indication
-
Automatic stop or alarm in case of overload
8. Emergency Operation System
Ensures operation in case of power failure.
-
Manual hand-crank or hydraulic emergency pump
-
Gravity or controlled free-fall lowering (if applicable)
9. Frame and Base Structure
Supports all winch components and transfers loads to the deck.
-
Welded steel structure
-
Designed for marine environment and fatigue loads
-
Surface treated (hot-dip galvanizing or marine paint system)
10. Safety and Monitoring Devices
Additional components to enhance operational safety.
-
Limit switches (upper / lower)
-
Rope slack switch
-
Drum guard and rotating part protection
